Floating all began in the mid 1950’s by Dr. John C. Lilly, a Neuro Scientist who invented the Sensory Deprivation Tank. The National Institute of Mental Health came up with the term Restricted Environmental Stimulation Technique also known as R.E.S.T.Floating Therapy triggers a deep relaxation response which is much deeper than normal sleep. This is a kind of sensory deprivation. When in the I-sopod Float Tank your mind drifts into the Theta State which is the brain state when healing begins. The differences between the Brain States are:

  • Alpha State is a mental state of deep relaxation and meditation.
  • Beta State is the state in which you are active and alert.
  • Delta State is the state of mind when you’re in a deep sleep.
  • Theta State is a state of very deep relaxation; it is used in hypnosis and during REM Sleep. People meditate consecutively for hours to reach this state in order to have absolute perfect calm. Theta brain waves can be considered the subconscious; they govern the part of our mind that lies between the conscious and the unconscious and retain memories and feelings. Theta brain waves are always creative and are characterized by feelings of inspiration and are known to be very spiritual. It is believed that this mental state allows you to act below the level of the conscious mind.

To understand Theta State in a simple way is to think about how it feels to be on top of a mountain totally absorbed by what’s around you and know that you are connected to the earth, the sky and all that is surrounds you. To know that all is real, just know that everything is. At that moment you are in Theta, a very powerful state.
